Although
the last few years in Scotland may have woven a faint thread of
Celtic colouring through some of his more recent music, Jim has
drawn on a diverse range of sources for his melodies and lyrics.
Jim compered a folk club in Lincolnshire for a few years before
moving to Scotland and earned a reputation as an excellent M.C.
He has frequently fronted a variety of shows, concerts and gigs,
and has become a popular stand-in compere at the New Dawn Folk Club
in Glasgow.
"As a writer, Jim has accomplished some truly outstanding
work. Having the ability to communicate a message about a serious
subject in a sensitive but, simultaneously, humorous way is not
a common attribute, but Jim has achieved this in several of his
songs. His fondness for fun in his performances has sometimes produced
a glimpse of other skills not normally associated with the folk
world. He could be the only hat-juggling, ventriloquist, folk singer
around; of course, there are some who might argue one's too many!
On a broader note, the songs in Jim's repertoire are largely drawn
from his experiences, feelings and observations. Whatever they say,
they are his way of saying it"
Kenny Caird (organiser - New Dawn Folk Club - Glasgow)
"Jim King has established himself in Glasgow and the West
as a truly original writer and performer. His music resonates through
the psyche, and some of his songs are dead good too!"
Danny Kyle - Celtic Connections, 1998
